Mawlawi Matiul Haq Khalis, the General Director of the National Environmental Protection Agency (NEPA), met with Namik Heydarov, the director of the ACBAR organization, to discuss Afghanistan’s environmental situation.
During the meeting, Heydarov emphasized the significance of environmental issues and climate change, underscoring the necessity for increased efforts in this area to attract international financial support for combating climate change.
Mawlawi Khalis said that Afghanistan is among the countries most affected by climate change, highlighting the need for collaborative work between NEPA, national, and international organizations in conducting research and gathering accurate data.
He revealed that environmental projects worth $900 million had been suspended following the establishment of the Islamic Emirate. However, six of these projects have been reactivated, with efforts ongoing to resume the remaining ones.
He affirmed Afghanistan’s commitment to presenting its environmental challenges at international forums to persuade the global community to restart and implement the suspended projects.
Additionally, he requested that ACBAR coordinate with all organizations to enhance collaboration with NEPA for more effective progress. Khalis also emphasized the importance of facilitating Afghanistan’s delegation’s participation in the COP30 conference to convey the environmental issues to the international community.
