As Afghanistan’s first SafeCare-certified hospital (recertified in 2024), FMIC has pioneered open-heart surgery, advanced diagnostics, and telemedicine, earning the IHF Award in 2021.

With a 176-bed capacity and a highly skilled Afghan medical team, FMIC is committed to advancing healthcare excellence. Through its Patient Welfare Support Programme, it has provided over $57.6 million in subsidized or free care, ensuring equitable access to high-quality treatment for vulnerable populations. 

Job Summary

  1. Regular Responsibilities:
  • Receive used equipment from OR and other units and make sure that the number of instruments is meeting the checklist
  • Report any discrepancies in the instrument received from OR and other units to the supervisor
  • Wash and disinfect instruments utilizing the approved standards for each item
  • Dry the instruments and inspect the instruments for any damage/malfunctioning and report to the supervisor
  • Lubricate the instruments if needed
  • Pack the instrument trays according to the approved checklists for each specialty or case considering the sterilization requirements.
  • Label the pack with (name of the pack, date of sterilization, cycle of sterilization, expiry date and his/her name
  • Sterilize the surgical packs and instruments based on the sterilization guidelines and protocol
  • Store the sterile items in designated areas and dispense the items to the OR and other units keeping the records as assigned
  • Rum Bowie Dick Test every morning to ensure the quality of sterilizer
  • Maintain records of the daily Bowie Dick Tests and document
  • Maintain records of each Loading/Cycle of the sterilizer as assigned
  • Handover/takeover to/from the staff the CSSD store instruments
  • Maintain records of the instruments used received from OR and other units
  • Maintain records of the instruments going through sterilization process
  • Perform and document daily cleaning of the CSSD equipment and specifically the sterilizers and submit daily report to the concern supervisor
  • Contributes to maintenance of an aseptic environment in the CSSD by following standard procedures
  • Operate all equipments as per manufacturer’s recommendation ensuring compliance with safety polices to minimize injury and incidents
  • Liaises with OR for obtaining and sending surgical instruments by following related protocols
  • Report any problem with equipment to supervisor immediately for timely rectification
  • Coordinate with the OR staff for emergency need of the instruments
  • Maintain documentations as assigned by supervisor/team leader
  • Demonstrates positive and supportive attitude towards supervisor and senior’s/team leaders
  • Actively identify and report hazards to ensure timely actions to reduce risk of injuries within workplace
  • Attend all training sessions organized by the unit management
  • Participate in continuous quality improvement activities to improve the services provided by CSSD to the customers
  • Work in a team environment contributes ideas and solutions to resolving problems that will improve teamwork within the department
  • Take all reasonable steps to ensure a safe environment and safety
  • Able to discharge duties on public holidays and off days; and perform long duty hours and shift duties including night shift as per need.
  • Performs any other related task as assigned by supervisor.
  1. Periodic Responsibilities
  • Participate in unit meetings and educational programs as required.
  • Offer duty in emergency cases. 
  • Document and report incidents to the supervisor.
  • Participate in departmental preparation activities for JCIA and SafeCare audits.
  • Participate in quality circles and quality projects whenever assigned by supervisor.

 

12. Any other factors

  • Stay long duty hours in emergency situation.
  • Compliance with IC standards and policies to prevent exposure to infection.
  • Utilizer appropriate body mechanics while performing tasks.
  • Use appropriate resources to protect him/herself from the radiation wherever applicable
  • Follow guidelines to protect him/herself from all the hazards related to his/her area of assignment.

Job Requirements

Academic & professional qualifications

  • Grade 12th 
  • Trained as technician from a recognized institution is preferable

Work experience:

  • Preferred but not essential

Knowledge and competencies (State skills, abilities & traits required)   

  • An effective team player and contributes to team building.
  • Possesses good interpersonal, communication and leadership skills.
  • Able to organize workload and identify priorities as per patient acuity.
  • Understand basic written and verbal English.

  • Be motivated towards learning and capacity development.

  • Takes feedback from supervisors constructively and works to improve on the identified areas.
